Three Hundred Year+ History

Kikkoman’s origins trace back more than three centuries to the traditional soy sauce brewers of Noda, Japan, where families perfected fermentation techniques that transformed simple ingredients—soybeans, wheat, salt, and water—into a rich and versatile seasoning. In 1917, several of these brewing families formally united to establish Kikkoman Corporation, combining centuries of craft with modern production and global ambition.

From the early 20th century onward, Kikkoman expanded beyond Japan, recognizing that its naturally brewed soy sauce could complement cuisines around the world. The company’s long-term vision focused on introducing authentic Japanese flavor traditions to international markets while maintaining its heritage brewing methods.

Kikkoman — Global Flavor Brand

Today Kikkoman Corporation is one of the world’s most recognized food brands, synonymous with premium soy sauce and culinary seasonings used in professional kitchens and home cooking worldwide.

Early Entry into the United States

Kikkoman was among the first Japanese food brands to establish a meaningful presence in the United States. In 1957, the company created its U.S. sales operation in San Francisco, introducing traditionally brewed soy sauce to American consumers at a time when Japanese ingredients were still largely unfamiliar.

As demand increased, Kikkoman strengthened its commitment to the U.S. market by opening its first American production facility in Walworth in 1973, followed by a second brewing plant in Folsom in 1998. These facilities allow Kikkoman to produce its naturally brewed soy sauce locally while maintaining the same fermentation process used in Japan.

Over the decades, Kikkoman has become a trusted pantry staple across the United States. Its naturally brewed soy sauce is valued for its balanced flavor and versatility, enhancing a wide range of dishes—from traditional Asian recipes to marinades, barbecue sauces, and modern fusion cuisine.

Licensing Program Development

Building on its strong brand recognition and culinary heritage, Kikkoman launched the first lifestyle brand extension licensing program centered on a Japanese food brand.

The program was initially developed for the United States market, where Kikkoman has enjoyed decades of consumer familiarity and trust. Its objective is to extend the brand beyond food products into carefully selected lifestyle categories that reflect cooking culture, kitchen design, and modern food-focused living at home.

The licensing strategy was developed jointly by international licensing consultancy ZenWorks and master licensing agent
Tact Communications, who together structured and continue to manage the program. Beyond North America, regional licensing partnerships support expansion in Europe with WildBrain CPLG, and in Australia and New Zealand with Asembl.

This initiative positions the Kikkoman brand for thoughtfully curated lifestyle product extensions that complement its heritage of flavor, quality, and culinary creativity.

With more than a century of brand heritage and decades of presence in American kitchens, Kikkoman offers compelling opportunities for brand extension beyond traditional food categories.
